KOCHI: The former acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court K. Narayana Kurup has said there was low awareness on organ donation among Keralites. He was addressing a press conference here on Tuesday. Mr. Kurup, who is chairman of the Society for Organ Retrieval & Transplantation (SORT), said that several patients with kidney and liver failure problems would get a new lease of life by way of organ transplantation. Since diabetic patients were vulnerable to organ failures, it would be appropriate for Kerala, which had a considerable number of diabetic patients, to adopt appropriate measures to deal with the situation. K. Sabhapathy, vice-chairman of SORT, said that though the Human Organs Transplantation Act was adopted by the Kerala government in 1998, nothing constructive was being done to implement it. As a result, most of the patients with organ failures were dying. The SORT was registered in 2000 with the patronage of Indian Medical Association.
