Farmers do not prefer some hospitals

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: The two major government hospitals in Mangalore city do not appear to be the choice of farmers in Dakshina Kannada as far as availing treatment under the Government’s Yashaswini Scheme is concerned.

The Government Wenlock Hospital and the Government Lady Goshen Hospital were among the 18 hospitals listed where farmers can avail themselves of treatment under the scheme for 2006-07.

Of them, none of the farmers went to these hospitals for treatment. They also did not prefer two other private hospitals — one at Moodbidri and the other at Belthangady.

The statistics given by M. Maheshwar Rao, Deputy Commissioner, at a press conference here on Tuesday revealed that 617 farmers were treated as in-patients in 15 hospitals in the district from April 2006 to January 2007.

Of the amount spent, the hospitals have paid Rs. 56,12,563 to the Yashaswini Trust. They have yet to pay Rs. 21,71,496.

This year, between July and September, 314 farmers have undergone treatment in 12 hospitals.

Though 16 hospitals have been short-listed for treatment under the scheme, this year again none of the farmers preferred the two government hospitals.

To a query that private hospitals were charging more for treatment considering the fact that “they can play with the government fund,” Mr. Rao said that “such cases have not come to the notice of district administration”.

In this financial year, 77,907 applications from farmers have been sent to the trust.

Of them, the trust has cleared 42,478 applications and the same number of Yashawini cards has been printed. The administration has taken steps to distribute them to the farmers concerned.

The target fixed for the district for 2007-08 is to enrol 1,50,000 farmers. So far, 79,392 farmers have been enrolled under the scheme. A sum of Rs. 120 as annual premium from each such farmer has been deposited in the trust, Mr. Rao said.
