Fisherwomen even occupy the market entrance New market planned at Adiudupi at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh Udupi: The main fish market, located in the centre of Udupi city on the Poornaprajna College Road, lacks basic facilities. This market also includes mutton and chicken stalls. Lack of amenities has made life difficult for the fisherwomen who come all the way from Malpe to sell their fish. There is congestion and the fisherwomen have to jostle for space. Fisherwomen, who sell fish and dry fish, have to sit together and there are frequent fights between them. Sometimes, when there are many fisherwomen selling fish, they even occupy the entrance to the fish market, thus effectively blocking the customers’ way. Though the City Municipal Council has appointed civic workers to clean the market, it is not enough. The water used for cleaning fish remains stagnant due to lack of proper drainage facilities. There is no systematic arrangement in the market. A fisherwoman said that the situation in the market could be improved only if arrangements were made for selling fish and dry fish. The gent’s urinals at the market appeared not to have been cleaned for weeks. There is no proper parking facility for two-wheelers and other vehicles at the market. The road is narrow and it has been made one-way. It is used among others by students of Poornaprajna College. Many vehicle owners park their vehicles by the side of the road making vehicular movement difficult. Two-wheelers are parked within the premises of the market. A move was initiated by the district administration a few months ago to shift the market to Adiudupi. But it met with resistance from fisherwomen who said that their business would be affected. New marketCommissioner of Udupi City Municipal Council Gokuldas Nayak told The Hindu on Tuesday that used water was getting blocked at the market because of old underground drainage pipeline. The gent’s urinals might be demolished during the widening of the road. The garbage at the market was being collected by the municipal authorities. But it would be handed over to self-help groups. Efforts were being made to create parking facility for eight cars and 30 two-wheelers near the market. However, a new market with modern facilities would come up soon at Adiudupi at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh under the Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project (KUDCEMP). “The new market will solve all problems. We will convince the fisherwomen to shift there,” Mr. Nayak said.
