Training for educational volunteers

Tuticorin: A 10-day training programme organised by the district administration for educational volunteers deployed in the district under the Continuing Education Programme of Union Ministry of Human Resource Development on ‘Activity Based Learning (ABL) techniques’, commenced here on Monday.

Resource persons, L. Thangalakshmi and M. Mary Julia, both block resource teacher educators of Sarva Shiksha Abiyan (SSA), were taking classes to elucidate the teaching techniques that were evolved under ABL methodology.

Attractive cards having words, pictures, numerical, phrases and information on nature were used under ABL mode to teach the students to make them understand the topics easily.

Official sources told The Hindu that the 210 educational volunteers who were being trained through this programme would, in turn, use the ABL technique to teach the illiterates aged between 15 and 35 enrolled themselves at the 617 Continuing Education Centres (CEC) functioning in the district.

Sources said that at present, 66,178 non-literates (41,723 female and 24,455 male) were there.

The Sattankulam block has the highest number of illiterates (4,697 persons).

Of the total illiterates, 42,231 (31,184 female and 11,047 male) had been enrolled at the CECs.

The number of scheduled caste persons who have registered their names to attend classes at CEC stand at 15,107 and scheduled tribe persons at 105.

P. Meenakshi Sundaram, supervisor, SSA, and J. Gunasekaran, district project co-ordinator, Continuing Education Programme, were coordinating the training schedules.
