Tension precedes by-poll to vice-chairman post

Abduction of Rajapalayam councillors complained

Town Welfare Councillors Association likely to field S.A. Manikanda Raja

S.R. Beema Raja may be the Congress candidate

RAJAPALAYAM: Complaints of abduction of councillors of Rajapalayam Municipality that were reported during the no-confidence motion against the then vice-chairman, A.A. Subbaraja, during July has once again resurfaced on the eve of by-election to the post of vice-chairman scheduled for Thursday.

The AIADMK-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam combine had won the no-confidence with the support of 26 members. The alliance was supported by the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, the Communist Party of India, the Puthiya Tamilagam and a few members of the Congress.

The victorious councillors formed Town Welfare Councillors Association, which is likely to field AIADMK’s S.A. Manikanda Raja for the post. The Congress party is likely to field the leader of the town unit of the party, S.R. Beema Raja.

The Congress has 16 councillors, after Mr. Subbaraja was disqualified as he failed to take part in three consecutive council meetingss.

A Congress functionary on Monday night filed a case with the Rajapalayam (North) police that six persons, including five councillors belonging to the opposition party, had kidnapped four councillors. The next day the son of an AIADMK councillor complained that he was beaten up by Congress cadres.

Amidst complaints, the whereabouts of 41 councillors was not known as both sides were trying to keep them in secret hideouts to prevent horse trading, police sources said.

The election process will begin at 9.30 a.m. on Thursday.
