COIMBATORE: Efforts are needed to improve awareness in the domestic market on the depth of information technology (IT) penetration, K. Thangaraj, chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Coimbatore Centre, said here on Monday.
Speaking at the inauguration of the annual conference of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), Coimbatore chapter, on “Capitalising Current Technology for Business”, he said that about two decades ago there were apprehensions on the impact of the use of computer.
Now, it had become a common tool. “Starting from years when it was more for data storage, now it is a knowledge sector.” With organisations spending huge amounts on computerisation, he urged the participants to explore if computerisation of any organisation had brought about the desired front end results that the customer directly experienced.
The country was expected to achieve $ 60 billion software exports in 2009. Services of the knowledge sector had multiple effects and its uses should be encouraged in the domestic market. Apart from investing in computers, “investing in software should be seen as a tangible asset,” he said.
“Technology is the way to grow when we are thinking and talking of making businesses manageable and scaleable,” he added.
Hence, one should study and implement the technology relevant for the respective business/work environment. Companies should know the benefits of tools such as technology, security and business intelligence.
Avinash K. Kadam, vice-president of ISACA International, said the association now focused on issues such as how IT and business goals were supporting each other and how IT could add value to business.
