Indian stranded in Bahrain Gulf round-up

Dubai: An Indian in Bahrain has lost all hopes of leaving the country under the government’s amnesty as he still has a claim of over $2,053 filed against him by his sponsor to settle.

Mohammed Kunji’s attempt for an out-pass has been rejected by the Bahrain immigration authorities until the case filed against him is solved. The 58-year-old has claimed that he paid $1,592 for a free visa through an agency to work as a cleaner in a company in 1990 and had lost his passport several years later, since when he had been stranded in Bahrain. His situation was further complicated when a case was filed against him in 1997. His sponsor had reportedly filed the case against him and two other colleagues over alleged unpaid amounts of visa renewal fee.

Qualification certificate

The UAE has announced that new workers coming to the country for employment will have to submit a certificate of qualification even if they practise professions based on expertise.

The UAE had exempted expatriates already working in the country and occupying administrative positions from the norm, but they should present a certificate of experience, Labour Minister Ali bin Abdullah Al Kaabi was quoted as saying by the official Emirates news agency on Monday. — PTI
