Elocution contest held to mark World Food Day

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: To commemorate World Food Day, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in association with Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti organised the annual inter-school elocution competition for the “Fight Against Hunger Trophy” here on Tuesday.

The theme chosen this year was “Right to Food: A Youth Perspective” to underline the fact that every person has a right to have regular access to sufficient, nutritionally adequate and culturally acceptable food for an active and healthy life. With millions of people still deprived of sufficient food, the Right to Food is not just economically, morally and politically imperative, it is also a legal obligation.

Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti vice-chairperson Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee and Daniel Gustafson, FAO representative in India and Bhutan, gave away the Fight Against Hunger Running Trophy-2007 to Arjun Singh of Springdales School on Pusa Road.

Dr. Gustafson reiterated FAO’s commitment to ensuring a healthy living to people all over the world.

Ms. Bhattacharjee said the Father of the Nation had no Gandhi before him. “He looked into himself and discovered his truth. We are fortunate to have him as our role model. The importance of this whole subject will be realised when people stop wasting food.”

A special issue of the Samiti’s children’s newspaper, “The Yamuna”, on the Right to Food theme was released on the occasion.

Students from almost 35 schools from Delhi and the National Capital Region took part in the competition.
