Letters to the Editor
This refers to the report that in the wake of the Ludhiana blast, the intelligence agencies have warned of more bombings (Oct. 16). Our intelligence officials have concluded that the developments in Pakistan over the last six months have weakened Pervez Musharraf’s grip over the terror groups operating from his country. This evaluation shows that our intelligence agencies depend on Gen. Musharraf to ensure our national security. That is, if the General fails, our security also fails. It is well and good if we have the cooperation of our neighbours in tackling terrorism. But our security agencies should have a fail-safe approach. Tony Abraham, Thiruvananthapuram The Ajmer and Ludhiana blasts point to the entrenchment of terrorists throughout the country. Besides strengthening and upgrading security in places of worship, politicians need to strengthen India’s greatest defence against extremism, its centuries-old tradition of religious tolerance, by opposing all forms of chauvinism and communalism, as rightly observed in the editorial “Challenge of Islamist terror” (Oct. 15). The terrorist menace should be tackled head on and governments must display the political will to crush it. The people’s resilience and fortitude in the face of terrorist strikes are commendable. B. Suresh Kumar, Coimbatore
