Dubai: The Indian Embassy in Bahrain has started enforcing a new wage structure for Indians, starting with fixing a minimum monthly wage of BD100 (Rs.10,000 approx) for housemaids and a provision for mobile phone as part of measures to protect its workers in the Gulf. The decision to fix a minimum wage for maids was taken following a meeting of the ambassadors in the Gulf called by Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi last month. Hundreds of thousands of women, mainly from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, are employed as domestic help in the Gulf countries. It is estimated that there are about 15,000 Indian housemaids in Bahrain. — PTI
