GLITTERING VIEW: Katrina Kaif, film actor, unveils the new Philips diamond encrusted Ambilight flat television model at a function in Mumbai on Tuesday. MUMBAI: Philips Electronics on Tuesday unveiled its diamond-encrusted flat TV in Mumbai priced at $155,000. About 2,250 diamonds of 225 carat each have been encrusted on the television sets. It is being taken around the globe. After its tour, it would be auctioned and the money would be donated for charity, a company official said. The company said it would start manufacturing LCD (liquid crystal display) televisions in India by December-end. “We would opt for a third party to make our LCDs. However, we will have control over the manufacturing and the components will be sourced by us,” Philips Electronics India Vice-President, S. Nagarajan, said. About 1.30 lakh LCD television sets were sold last year, according to an analyst. Sales this year are expected to touch between 3.70 lakh units and four lakh units and by 2009, it is estimated to touch nine lakh. Philips Electronics India, a subsidiary of the Netherlands-based Royal Philips Electronics, is making its DVDs in India through a third-party. Philips LCDs are witnessing 15 per cent growth in the 42 inch volume. So far, the company has been importing LCD television sets. Besides the television segment, Philips is witnessing growth in the audio-visual segment. “We have a market share of 32 per cent in the audio-visual segment,” he said. — PTI
