Viji sets a record as her golden run continues

Tirunelveli: C. Viji of Sri Parasakthi College, Courtallam, who won a double (800m and 10000m) in women’s section on Monday, went on to win the third gold with a new-meet record in 5000m in the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University inter-collegiate athletics meet at Abisekapatti on Tuesday. Viji clocked 20:15.4s to erase the old record of 20:25.6s set by Rukmani of Ayyappa College, Nagercoil.

S. Silambarasi of Lady Doak College, Madurai won the 200m and long jump on the opening day of the three-day Madurai Kamaraj University inter-collegiate athletics meet at MGR Race Course stadium here on Tuesday.

Batlagundu school rallies to win

Government Higher Secondary School, Batlagundu rallied to defeat American College HSS, Madurai 45-42 and enter the quarter-finals of the seventh annual State-level inter-school basketball tournament for Kalimark Trophy at Madurai on Tuesday.

St. Joseph’s College, with an all-win record at the end of the semifinal league stage, won the title at the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate volleyball tournament in Tiruchi on Tuesday.

Jamal Mohammed College finished second, while Dharmapuram Adhinam Arts College secured the third spot.

At Kangeyam, Nirmala College for Women (Coimbatore) thrashed Saraswathi Thiyagaraja College (Pollachi) 29-9, 29-5 to clinch the title in the Bharathiar University inter collegiate ball badminton tournament at the PSG Ponnammal College of Education recently.

Vidyasagar (Udumalpet) scored a hard fought 29-25, 29-21 win over Bharathiar University Departments to wrest the third spot.

Easy for Lawrence

At Udhagamandalam, Lawrence posted a comfortable 155-run win over Hebron School in the NDCA under-13 inter schools cricket tournament for the Selai Gowder Memorial Rolling Trophy at the Hebron grounds on Tuesday.

The scores: 207 for nine in 30 overs (Amar D. Gupta 42, P. Aditya 42, T.J. Theivendran four for 42) bt Hebron 52 (Rishab Mehta four for 8).
