CALL BARRED: Students can no longer use mobile phone in schools.

CHENNAI: School student? Leave the mobile phone at home when you go to school. The State government has announced a ban on mobile phones in schools that come under its purview, irrespective of the age of the student.

School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said on Tuesday that the Director of School Education had been asked to advise students and parents in an appropriate manner. The ban comes into effect from Tuesday, he said.

The government felt that if students carried a mobile phone to school, their attention would not be completely on studies. Teachers were also distracted by the use of cell phones. Parents had repeatedly brought to the notice of the government these issues. It was also brought to the notice of the government that the number of students sending SMS when classes were on was on the increase.

It was against this backdrop that issue of banning cell phones in schools was considered, an official note said.
