Plea to upgrade village panchayats

“Kundrandarkovil, Vanniyanviduthi, Koozhaiyankadu, Ariyur should be immediately bifurcated”


PUDUKOTTAI: Speakers at an official meeting for re-drawing the boundaries of local bodies held here on Monday pleaded for upgrading the status of eight village panchayats to town panchayats.

They also wanted the big village panchayats in the district to be bifurcated for better administration.

Additional civic facilities needed

They said that eight village panchayats in the district – Gandarvakottai, Mazhaiyur, Kottaipattinam, Tirumayam, Kothamangalam, Vadakadu, Viralimalai and Manamelkudi -- with a large population, needed additional civic facilities.

A number of members of the public from these village panchayats besides political representatives submitted petitions, pleading for upgradation of the village panchayats.

Bifurcate 60 panchayats

A cross section of office-bearers of service organisations and farmers’ representatives pleaded for bifurcation of about 60 village panchayats.

Carving of new village panchayats would go a long way in ensuring efficient administration of the local bodies, they said, adding Kundrandarkovil, Vanniyanviduthi, Koozhaiyankadu, Ariyur should be immediately bifurcated.

They underlined the need for merging part of Pudukottai village panchayat with Pudukottai municipality.

Proposal to be forwarded

Collector D. Uthirakkumaran, who presided over the meeting, said that in all 106 petitions were received.

The proposal for re-drawing the panchayat limits would be sent to the State Government after obtaining their concurrence.

The village panchayat presidents would convene a meeting to adopt resolution expressing their consent for re-drawing with addition of new areas.

MLAs S. Rajasekaran and R. Nedunchezhian, District Panchayat president C. Muthusamy and Aranthangi Municipal Chairman P. Mariappan participated.
