Extending benefits: Collector V. Chandrasekaran handing over assistance to a disabled person at a camp in Aruppukottai on Tuesday. ARUPPUKOTTAI: For 17 long years, this rural woman did not know that her mentally retarded daughter, R. Manjula, could get a free wheel chair from the Government. The mother would have been carrying her for many more years, had she not come to a special camp for the disabled persons held here on Tuesday. Fortunately, the Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, took notice of it. While handing over monthly maintenance assistance, he asked the mother as to why she had not got a wheel chair for the girl. “I never knew about it (that the Government gave free wheel chairs),” she said. The Collector asked her to register her daughter’s name with the officials to get one. The District Rehabilitation Officer S. Ramakrishnan, said that the girl would get the wheel chair. Not only Manjula many more physically and mentally challenged people were benefited by the first Panchayat Union-level camp for the disabled. Inaugurating the camp, the Collector distributed assistance to the tune of Rs. 3.95 lakhs to 81 persons. The Collector said that such camps would be conducted in all the 11 panchayat unions in the district, so that the disabled are spared from running from pillar to post seeking assistance. “They need not come all the way to the Collectorate to get identity cards, bus pass, walking stick, spectacles, Braille watch. Even long pending bank loan applications will be cleared to the deserving as officials from all banks in the Union are available here,” he said. The medical panel would be available at the camp venue to examine the disabled persons and give certificates that would enable them to get benefits under various schemes, he added. The two-day camp would benefit 633 disabled people in the union. The Revenue and Social Welfare Departments and District Rural Development Agency had put up their stalls to look into specific needs of the disabled. The District Rehabilitation Officer urged the disabled people to bring ration card, copies of their photograph, income certificate to enable the officials to finalise the benefits for them on the spot. The Aruppukottai Panchayat Union Chairman, K.K.S.S.V.D. Subbaraj, the Aruppukottai municipal Chairman, S. Sivaprakasam, the Aruppukottai Revenue Divisional Officer, S. Venkatesan, were among those who participated.
