MOTHER’S care: Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna serving food to school students in Karur on Tuesday. Collector T. N. Venkatesh assists her while Karur MP K. C. Palanisamy looks on. KARUR: Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna has exhorted philanthropists to come forward to construct and donate buildings to house anganwadis and noon meal centres. Addressing the media here on Tuesday, Dr. Poongothai added that the anganwadis and noon meal centres would be named after the donors. Such honour would also be extended to those who come forward to bear the maintenance of anganwadis and noon meal centres. The Minister said that Rs.500 would be given every month to mentally challenged or mentally ill children of any age or economic status if the parents or guardians produce a certificate by a competent authority to that effect. The department was monitoring the upbringing of children left in Government care under the cradle baby scheme, said the Minister. The State Government was entrusting these children with select voluntary organisations from whom people could legally adopt them. Stating that the scheme was attracting more infants in Dharmapuri, Salem, Dindigul and Theni districts, Dr. Poongothai said conferences had been conducted to sensitise voluntary organisations to discuss means to discourage donations of babies under the scheme. Moreover, institutional deliveries could bring down cradle baby scheme donations, she said. Earlier, Dr. Poongothai reviewed the performances of several departments in Karur district and urged the officials to ensure that the district became a role model in social welfare. School uniforms, texts and notebooks should reach the students before the commencement of the next academic year, she told them. She gave away cheques worth Rs.15,000 each to 153 persons totally worth Rs. 22.95 lakh under the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme and Rs. 15,200 worth bonds each to 179 beneficiaries worth Rs. 27.20 lakh under the Sivakami Ammaiyar Memorial Girl Children Protection Scheme. She inspected an anganwadi and noon meal centre at Thanthonrimalai, inspected the quality of food and herself served food to the children. Social Welfare Secretary N. S. Palaniappan, Collector T. N. Venkatesh, District Revenue Officer Jawahar Shanthakumar, Karur MP K. C. Palanisamy, former MLA Vasuki Murugesan, Krishnarayapuram MLA P. Kamaraj, District Panchayat Chairperson Poovai Ramesh Babu, District Social Welfare Officer C. Karpagam, District Rehabilitation Officer C. Jasmine and others participated in the review meeting.
