Mixed reaction to ‘Datta yatra’ proposal

Correspondent

Non-BJP parties are opposed to new programmes

CHIKMAGALUR: The district administration on Tuesday conducted a meeting to elicit the views of various political parties and organisations on the proposal by the Sangh Parivar to conduct a “Dattamala Abhiyana” in Bababudangiri on October 26 and a “Datta Sankeerthana Yatra” in Chikmagalur on October 24.

Non-BJP parties and organisations opposed to the Sangh Parivar were against any new programmes proposed in connection with “Dattatreya Peeta.” They urged the authorities not to allow any performance by the Sangh Parivar in Chikmagalur city as it would create tension and incite violence.

Pointing out that the Dattamala celebrations were being conducted peacefully for the past seven years, representatives from the BJP and the Sangh Parivar said that it was not proper to question the religious practices of the Hindus.

Assuring the authorities that there would be no untoward incident, they appealed to the district administration to grant permission for the “Datta Sankeerthana Yatra.” They also volunteered to give an assurance in writing.

Reiterating that they had no intention of disturbing peace or hurting the feelings of any community, they stressed the need to preserve the culture and tradition of the Hindus.

The Datta Jayanti celebrations were also being conducted peacefully, they added. Naveen Raj Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur district, said that a report had been submitted to Governor Rameshwar Thakur. Stating that any decision taken would be in the interest of the public, he appealed to the people to cooperate with the administration in this regard.

Superintendent of Police Vipul Kumar spoke.

Political parties and organisations that participated in the meeting included the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (Secular), Communist Party of India, Viswa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike, Dalit Sangarsh Samiti and Jaati Vinasha Vedike.
