Davangere City Corporation to provide them with infrastructure

Horticulture and Agriculture departments to buy compost produced by SHGs

Business ventures mooted by enterprising women to be given support

DAVANGERE: More than 50 Self Help Groups (SHG) of different villages in Davangere district will soon be given training in the production of vermi compost, after which they will be allowed to manufacture and sell it to the Horticulture and Agriculture departments.

The Davangere City Corporation has come forward to provide the space for the production of vermi compost, and has also agreed to provide waste and rotten vegetables collected, to the vermi compost unit. Self Help Groups of Kondajji, Avaragere and other villages will soon be trained in this.

The City Corporation has initiated the scheme as part of its Waste Management programme.

A meeting of different departments will soon be held to establish coordination among the SHGs and departments that need vermi compost. During the meeting, contracts will be signed between the SHGs and government departments on issues such as the purchase of vermi compost, and the mode of payment. The departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Women and Child Welfare, and Health will take part in the meeting. They will also extend support for new ventures mooted by enterprising women of the SHGs.

Deputy Director of the Women and Child Welfare department Jayaswamy told The Hindu that the Davangere City Corporation had come forward to provide infrastructure for the vermi compost unit to be established on the outskirts of the city. He said the departments of Horticulture and Agriculture required huge amounts of vermi compost for their schemes, and would buy the produce manufactured by the SHGs.

He said the SHGs would get good profits from this venture without any investment as the City Corporation would provide the infrastructure for the establishment of the unit.
