HC suspends sentence of Tanveer

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday allowed a criminal appeal by Tanveer Ahmed and suspended his sentence, subject to payment of Rs. 28,000 as costs.

Tanveer Ahmed, a resident of Tyanari Road in Pillana Garden, Bangalore, had petitioned the High Court against his conviction on September 27, 2007, by the Fast Track Court , Bangalore. The court had found him guilty on several counts and sentenced him to three and a half years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 28,000.

Challenging the verdict, Tanveer said the prosecution case against him was riddled with discrepancies and based on contradictory facts. According to the prosecution, Tanveer had on May 8, 2004, assembled near the Palace Grounds, along with several others. When they were spotted by the police, they tried to run them down and also opened fire.

The police had registered cases against Tanveer and others under Sections 399, 400, 332, 307 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3 of the Arms Act. He was subsequently arrested.

Justice Jawad Rahim noted that Tanveer had already spent the tenure of the sentence. He suspended the sentence on condition that Tanveer deposit Rs. 28,000 as costs.

Bail granted

Justice Jawad Rahim on Tuesday granted bail to a resident of Hosadurga, who was accused of dowry death.

Dharnesh, a resident of Mathodu hobli in Hosadurga, married Prema. He alleged that Prema had set herself on fire in 2005 and she later died of burns in hospital. He alleged that the police had implicated him for her death. The police version was that his demands for more dowry had led Prema to commit suicide. Dharnesh said that he had suffered extensive burns and was still taking treatment.

He said his release on bail was necessary for further medical treatment. He urged the court to grant him bail. Justice Jawad Rahim granted conditional bail to Dharnesh.
