TIRUNELVELI: The two-acre free land scheme, meant for landless small and marginal farmers and farmhands, will soon improve the socio-economic status of the beneficiaries, according to S. Thangasamy, Joint Commissioner, Land Administration, Chennai.
While inspecting the cluster development recently at Urumankulam, wherein 28 beneficiaries were given 44.49 acres in Radhapuram block, the Joint commissioner exhorted the Deputy Director of Agriculture, Tirunelveli, S. Veluchamy, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Radhapuram, N. Hubert Robinson and the Assistant Director of Horticulture, Tirunelveli, C. Israel, to encourage and help the beneficiaries to attain socio-economic freedom by using the land.
Accompanied by the District Revenue Officer, G. Srinivasan, the Joint Commissioner interacted with some of the beneficiaries, who told the official that they would take up intercropping with groundnut, pulses, etc. during the ensuing northeast monsoon after harvesting the current intercrop like curry cucumber and ash gourd.
He appealed to the beneficiaries to adopt innovative technologies being advocated by the experts from Departments of Horticulture and Agriculture.
