Desalination plant first phase to be over by May

CHENNAI: The first phase of the desalination plant in Minjur, to supply about 15 million litres of water a day (mld) to the city, will be completed by Maynext year.

Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin visited the site of the 100 mld plant at Kattupalli, Minjur, on Tuesday and conducted a status review. IVRCL Infrastructures and Projects Limited and its technical partner Befesa of Spain are developing the plant on a Design, Build, Own, Operate and Transfer basis. Chennai Metrowater has signed a water purchase agreement with the company for procuring water over 25 years at a cost of Rs.48.66 per kilo litres.

A Metrowater official said about 40 per cent of the works in 10 units, including seawater intake tower, filters and reverse osmosis buildings, have been completed. The Minister called for measures to complete the full project by August next year, he said. Mr. Stalin also inspected the work on nearly 30-km-long pipeline to transport water from the plant to Red Hills.

The project, with a Rs.93 crore funding under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, is being implemented in two phases, he added.
