KHAMMAM: Seethaphal or custard apple is a fast vanishing species in Khammam -- one of the largely-forested districts in the State.
The tropical fruit tree, found to be propagated by the spread of the seed, is no longer seen in the backyards.
It is found in a very limited number in certain pockets like Yellandu and Tirumalayapalem. So is the case with its much sought after fruit of sugary taste.
The tribal women, selling baskets full of seethaphal, have been replaced by cycle-wallahs engaged by big fruit merchants.
As the demand for the fruit could not be met with the limited supplies from local sources, the merchants have been taking bulk stocks from East and West Godavari districts. The cost of the custard apple is as high as 250 a dozen in the beginning of the season.
The bulk supplies received from the neighbouring pockets helped in bringing the fruit within the reach of the common people. The cost is, however, still ranging from Rs. 50 to Rs. 120 per dozen.
