CHENNAI: Minister for Rural Industries Pongalur N. Palanisamy on Tuesday urged officials of the District Industry Centres to set up more silk weaving centres this year.
After reviewing developmental works of his department at the Secretariat, he said this year, silk farmers should be given support without delay and expeditious steps taken to enable them to get grants from the Central Silk Board. State Government grants should reach more than 10,000 silk farmers in the State. Mulberry should be cultivated in not less than 10,000 acres.
Reasonable price
The silk farmers should get a reasonable price for cocoons and silk yarn based on their quality, he told officials.
Mr. Palanisamy called for the speeding up of the work on Poompuhar’s proposed permanent exhibition at Mamallapuram and Kanyakumari.
He also called for steps for the setting up of a Poompuhar museum in Chennai.
