CHENNAI: The police have requested courts in the State to destroy pirated film CDs in convicted cases to prevent possible leakage, S. Ramanathan, Inspector-General of Police, Special Investigation Team of the CB-CID, who is also in-charge of the Video Piracy Cell, has told The Hindu.
Following this, nearly 1 lakh CDs worth Rs. 80 lakh and 3,500 CDs worth Rs. 19 lakh were destroyed in Madurai and Athur a few days ago.
A large number of pirated CDs are seized by the special unit every year. Besides the 12 units of the special unit, each of which is in charge of more than one district, seizures are also made by the local police.
After conviction, the seized material must be destroyed according to the law. The film discs to be destroyed pertain to cases in the last few years.
This year, till October 15, the Video Piracy Cell seized discs worth Rs.17.09 crore. A total of 1,432 cases have been registered and 1,438 persons arrested, says Mr. Ramanathan.
According to him, 4,698 kg of ganja seized in 5,595 cases and brown sugar weighing 7.65 kg seized in three cases by the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau CID of the State police will be destroyed at Thenmelpakkam in Kancheepuram district on October 25. The cases were disposed of by courts in the last two years.
