New party launched

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The United Women Front (UWF) — billed as India’s first national political party formed by women — was launched here on Tuesday with the promise of a new kind of politics.

Announcing the launch, the party’s national president Suman Krishan Kant said the UWF had been formed to provide women space in Indian polity.

Stating that women constituted only eight per cent of Parliament’s membership 60 years after Independence, Ms. Kant, wife of the former Vice-President, Krishan Kant, said: “We are tired of waiting for the Women’s Reservation Bill.”

Her party, Ms. Kant said, would field candidates for elections at all levels — from panchayat to Parliament. Besides providing the country a clean political system, the UWF agenda included rooting out criminalisation of politics, speedy justice to women, an equitable society, equal representation to men and women in legislatures, and supremacy of Parliament in all matters, she said.
