SINGAPORE: Japan on Tuesday cut off a proposed project-aid package worth $ 4.7 millions, meant for a university in Myanmar. However, Tokyo said there was no move at this stage to impose economic sanctions on Myanmar’s ruling junta for its failure to speed up democratisation in that country. The partial slash in aid, to the tune of 552-million yen, follows the death of a freelance Japanese photo-journalist, who was believed to have been killed by Myanmar’s security forces during their crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Yangon in September. U.N. Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari, now on a tour of countries that could persuade or pressure the Myanmar junta, held talks with Malaysian Foreign Minister Hamid Albar on Tuesday.
