COLOMBO: At least 30 LTTE Tigers and eight soldiers were killed in clashes in the north in the last 24 hours, according to the military. The Defence Ministry here on Tuesday claimed that the troops had on Monday launched several “pre-emptive strikes” near their forward defences in Wanni and Jaffna. It said the strikes followed a series of attacks on the security forces at isolated posts in Vavuniya and Mannar. It said on the Wanni front, troops launched their first strike at a terror hideout at Mullikulama killing 15 cadres and injuring 15. Troops found seven bodies of young women and seized six T-56 machine guns and one Multi Purpose Machine Gun. The military said one soldier was killed and seven were injured as the terrorists used artillery and heavy mortar fire. The Ministry said troops “refrained” from retaliating since the LTTE has positioned all of their artillery and heavy mortar batteries around the sacred Madhu church. The military said infantrymen killed eight more LTTE cadres in two separate attacks at Vilathikulama. Separately, six soldiers at the Thalgasmankada military post in the Ampara district were killed following an attack by the LTTE. The Air Force claimed to have destroyed an LTTE’s “military and logistic base” in Mullaittivu. However, the LTTE alleged that five civilians including three children were wounded in the air raid on a civilian settlement in the Mullaittivu district.
