BERHAMPUR: Students and people from different walks of life joined hands with their counterparts in more than 100 countries on Wednesday by taking oath to eradicate poverty by 2015. The oath was taken to mark the International Day for Eradication of Poverty. Similar oaths were taken at 15 places in Ganjam district. The students of city-based Sahid Laxman Nayak High School at Court Peta also took the oath apart from various women groups, youths and labour organisations, said Sarveswar Mohapatra of Nirmata. The oath taking ceremony was jointly organised in India by the ‘Let us keep promises campaign’ and Nirmata. ‘Let us keep promises campaign’ is aimed at reminding the leaders and governments of 189 countries, who had set millennium development goals at the United Nations (UN) Millennium Summit held in 2000. The world leaders agreed to achieve eight time bound targets by the year 2015. First in the list was eradication of extreme poverty and hunger. Other promisesThe other promises include achievement universal primary education, gender equality, reduction of child mortality, improvement of mental health, eradication of diseases like AIDS, polio and malaria, environmental sustainability and to develop global partnership for development. At the Sahid Laxman Nayak High School the students along with their teachers took oath to reduce disparity among people and to fight against poverty so that eradication of poverty becomes a reality in India by 2015. Villagers including women also took oath at the Sitalapalli village.
