KANNUR: Tsunami rehabilitation activities being implemented in the district through various government departments will be accelerated. The projects being implemented or prepared by Harbour Engineering, Education, Major Irrigation, Minor Irrigation, Social Welfare and Public Works Departments and the Kerala Water Authority were reviewed at the meeting. Education Department officials disclosed at the meeting that 1421 applications had been received for student scholarship as part of the rehabilitation programme.

The officials were instructed at the meeting to submit an estimate of repairs carried out in aided schools in tsunami-affected areas by October 23 as there was a government order to include such schools in the rehabilitation package.

The Major Irrigation Department has been implementing various projects at an estimated cost of Rs.8 crore. Tenders for the construction of a seawall as part of the projects had already been invited, department officials informed. Seawalls would come up at Ramanthali Valiyakadappuram, Muzhappilangad Ezharakkadappuram and Azhikode Meenkunnu.
