TAMBARAM: Kancheepuram Collector Pradeep Yadav on Tuesday said the arrangement to dump solid waste in abandoned stone quarries in the southern suburbs of Chennai was only temporary, until work on integrated compost yards was completed.
Work on the modern, integrated compost yard in Venkatamangalam was in progress and it was proposed to establish similar facilities in Kaarapakkam panchayat off Rajiv Gandhi Salai and Anakaputhur Municipality near Pallavaram.
Till such projects were completed, the Kancheepuram district administration had decided to use abandoned stone quarries in Medavakkam, Ottiyambakkam, Erumaiyur and Zamin Pallavaram as temporary landfill sites, Mr. Yadav told reporters after a meeting with chiefs of rural and urban local bodies in the southern suburbs of Chennai.
The meeting was held at St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union, Chitlapakkam.
K. Elumalai, Union Chairman, senior officials of the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply and Directorate of Town Panchayats took part.
Owing to a space crunch, most rural and urban local bodies were forced to dump garbage in open space and other restricted areas and hence, the district administration had earmarked some of the abandoned quarries where the solid waste could be disposed of , Mr. Pradeep Yadav said.
The Collector said chiefs of these rural and urban local bodies had to take greater interest in source segregation and converting kitchen waste into manure. Each of these temporary landfill sites would be under the care of the nearest municipality or town panchayat, which in turn would collect maintenance charges from those local bodies dumping garbage.
