“Finishing” touch given to students’ skills

Staff Reporter

WARANGAL: The joy was writ large on their faces. For them, the long awaited dream had come true. Nineteen boys and girls who graduated in engineering with different specialisation received offer letters from TCS company here on Wednesday.

Of the 96 candidates who hailed from different engineering colleges, 19 were selected by TCS at the campus interviews held after the ‘finishing school’ – a skill improvement programme conducted by the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal in collaboration with the Ministry of HRD and NASSCOM.

“This is completely different from what we learned in our regular class. The finishing school focused more on improving our skills that are just suitable to the industry such as practical tools, communication skills, approaching interviews. They video-graphed and pointed out the mistakes we committed during mock interviews,” P. Sri Ramya, who completed B. Tech (CSIT) from Karshak Engineering College, Hyderabad, said.

P. S. Manasa who did here B. Tech (CSE) from SR Engineering College, Warangal, said experts from different institutions and industry taught them the skills needed to get through the interviews. “Back in our college, there was no campus recruitment in that year. After trying for one year, I joined this finishing school. I am delighted this course helped me get my dream job,” she said with glee.

“Many students are excellent in their subjects. But, they lack basic communication skills and little hands on experience that every industry expects from new recruits. We bridge the gap between the institute ,” NIT director Y. V. Rao explained.
