Training in preparation of value-added fishery products

Staff Reporter

Over 20 women are attending three-day programme

Tuticorin: A three-day training programme on ‘preparation of value-added fishery products’ organised by the Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI) for women from various coastal hamlets in the district commenced here on Wednesday.

The programme was one of the components of a Rs.16.7-lakh project allocated to the FCRI by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, with an aim to empower women by imparting technical skills to them.

V.K. Venkataramani, dean, FCRI, told reporters that as part of the training, women were taught culinary techniques to prepare pickles, biscuits, puffs, wafers, burgers and noodles from various species of fish.

The trainees would also be given inputs on topics such as hygienic handling practices, personal hygiene, packaging and marketing, which were essential in the manufacture and supply of value-added fish products.

A total of 25 women are attending the training. K. Rathnakumar and G. Indra Jasmine, both faculty members at FCRI, coordinate the programme, the Dean said.

Dr. Venkataramani said that the institute planned to set up two production units (one each in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts) to popularise the manufacturing techniques of value-added fishery products on a large scale, using the corpus allocated under the project (from Rs 16.7 lakh).

Equipment such as banking oven, processing table, packaging materials and sealing machines would be procured for the proposed production units on a total outlay of Rs.4 lakh, said Dr. Venkataramani.
