dated October 18, 1957: Problem of disarmament

Mr. V. Krishna Menon, Indian Defence Minister, said on October 16 in New York that the number of countries which signed the recent 23-Power (Western) resolution on disarmament was “by no means an index of what will happen to it afterwards.” He was addressing the U.N. General Assembly’s Political Committee on disarmament. “The only one way we shall get disarmament is if the Americans and the Russians come to some agreement and are prepared to save the world from atomic destruction. The small non-nuclear nations have the right to expect some solution,” Mr. Menon declared.
