KOLKATA: The Government had contested the appeal for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the death of Rizwanur Rahman, “on the question of the legality, not on its content.” “We are awaiting a ruling by the constitutional Bench,” West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said on the demand for an agency probe made by family members of the computer graphics teacher, whose body was found near the rail track near here on September 21 . “Law and order is a State subject and I do not think that the CBI is omnipotent,” Mr. Bhattacharjee said. As far as he was concerned, there was little difference between an inquiry by the CBI and one by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The State government had ordered the CID to investigate the case but with the court ruling calling for a CBI inquiry “the CID’s report [which was to have been submitted shortly] has become irrelevant.” ‘Belated action’Asked for her reaction to the decision of transferring the police officers, Rahman’s mother Kiswar Jahan said: “The action is belated. Why are they only transferred, they will be committing the same offence wherever they might be posted.” “They should have been suspended,” Rahman’s elder brother Rukhwanur said.
