NUKU’ALOFA (Tonga): Fiji’s interim Prime Minister vowed on Wednesday during the 38th Pacific Islands Forum to hold election in the first quarter of 2009.
Cmdr Voreqe Bainimarama, also Fiji’s army chief, confirmed to leaders of the forum, the inter-government regional political body grouping 16 nations and territories, that the election has no condition and he and the army will accept the outcome of the election. Cmdr. Bainimarama said at Vava’u island during leaders’ retreat that “I have given an undertaking and we will go to the polls in 2009. There is time, I believe, to get us there.” The Forum welcomed Fiji leader’s “undertaking”. —Xinhua
