Tirunelveli: C. Viji of Sri Parasakthi College (Courtallam) cornered glory on the final day also, adding two more golds (1500m and half marathan) in the women’s section of the three-day Manonmaniam Sundaranar University inter-collegiate athletics meet at Abisekapatti here on Wednesday.

Two new meet records were also set on the final day. Muthumari of St. Mary’s College (Tuticorin) clocked 26.2s in the women’s 200m, bettering the old mark of 26.6s set by S.B. Ani Besant of Holy Cross College, Nagercoil.

Rajesh of APA College (Nanguneri) vaulted to a new high of 4.1m in the men’s pole vault to erase the old mark of 3.5m set by Arul Ruban of St. Xaviers College (Palayamkottai).

Women: 200m: Muthumari 26.2s (NMR-Old 26.6s); 400m: Maria Roselin 1:06.4s; 1500m: C. Viji 5:25.9s.

Long jump: Vidya 5.18m; shot put: Bhagavathiammal 8.03m; half-marathon: C. Viji 1:34:01s; heptathlon: Sumathi (St. Mary’s) 2044pts; 4x100m relay: St. Mary’s College, Tuticorin 53.5s. Team championship: St. Mary’s College, Tuticorin: 68 points.

Three records set

Three meet records were set on the second day of the three-day Madurai Kamaraj University inter-collegiate athletics meet at the MGR Race Course stadium, Madurai, on Wednesday.

The results (winners only): Men: 5000m: P. Ramesh 16:36.52s; shot put: A. Veerababu 10.47m; high jump: M. Muthukumar 1.76m; decathlon: M. Kannan 4736pts; 4x400m relay: MSSWB College 3:23.91s (NMR-Old 3:31.10s).

Women: 5000m: S. Rasma 23:35.89s; 100m hurdles: D. Vishnu Priya 18.15s; shot put: B. Anamica 12.48m (NMR-Old 12.19m); high jump: C. Karthika 1.35m; discus: B. Anamica 35.30m; 4x400m relay: Lady Doak College 4:31.13s (NMR-Old 4:31.69s).

IRRS in last four

Host Idayam Rajendran Residential School ‘A’ team entered the semifinal round robin league of the annual Kalimark Trophy State-level inter-school basketball tournament, defeating Rajah’s HSS, Sivagangai 55-47 at Madurai on Wednesday.

Alphonse shines

Alphonse’s (51, five for 16) helped DCW CC beat Spic CC by six runs and entered the semifinals of the 14th L.P. Rayen memorial Trophy cricket tournament at Tuticorin on Wednesday.

The scores (quarterfinals): DCW CC 158 for six in 25 overs (Alphonse 51, Chidambaram 46) bt Spic CC 152 in 24.5 overs (Alphonse five for 16).

Seconds CC ‘A’ 189 for eight in 25 overs bt Youth CC 119 in 21.4 overs.

AUCPE wins

Alagappa University College of Physical Education (Karaikudi) beat Ananda College (Devakottai) 25-18, 25-19 for the title in the Alagappa University inter-collegiate (men’s) volleyball tournament at Sivagangai on Wednesday.
