PALAKKAD: A fighting half-century by Jagir D. Shah (73 batting) and his unfinished 52-run partnership for the ninth wicket along with Tinu Yohannan (15 batting) helped Central Zone post a modest 220 for eight in its first innings on the opening day of its match against North Zone in the State senior inter-zone cricket tournament for the Jacob Trophy at the Fort maidan here on Wednesday. The scores: Central Zone 220 for eight (Jagir D. Shah 73 n.o.) vs. North Zone. Six-wkt. win for Kerala Veterans ‘B’Kerala Veterans ‘B’ defeated Lanka Cavaliers by six wickets in the veterans cricket match at the Palace Oval in Kochi on Wednesday. The scores: Lanka Cavaliers 103 in 19.3 overs lost to Kerala Veterans ‘B’ 104 for four in 14.1 overs. Inter-school tournamentThe eighth all-Kerala inter-school basketball tournament for the Porukara Trophy will be held at the Porukara Junior College court, Champakulam, from Wednesday. Sixteen teams are in the fray in the boys’ section and eight in the girls’ section. Hariharan appointed coachFormer Ranji player V. Hariharan has been appointed coach of the Kerala Ranji team. The appointment was confirmed by the Kerala Cricket Association on Wednesday. Bhavan’s Vidaya Mandir enters finalBhavan’s Vidaya Mandir (Elamakkara) defeated NSS College (Tripunithura) by two-wickets and entered the final of the 21st Refinian Cup inter-school cricket tournament. Cochin Refineries ‘A’ defeated Adarsh Vidyala (Kakkanad) by eight wickets to enter the semifinal. The scores: Adarsh Vidyalaya (Kakkanad) 65 in 18.1 overs (Kailash four for 12) lost to Cochin Refineries ‘A’66 for two in 15 overs. NSS Tripunithura 95 in 18.4 overs lost to Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir (Elamakkara) 96 for eight in 19.3 overs.
