THANJAVUR: The Tamil Nadu Traders’ Federation and the All Traders’ Association of Kumbakonam have appealed to the Central Government to lay a railway line from Kumbakonam to Vridachalam via Jayamkondam. All Traders’ Association of Kumbakonam secretary V. Sathiyanarayanan and office-bearers submitted a memorandum in New Delhi to Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Youth Affairs and Sports, Mani Shankar Aiyar, who represents Mayiladuthurai constituency in which Kumbakonam falls. The memorandum said that the new line would reduce the distance from Kumbakonam to Chennai by 74 kms and the distance between Kumbakonam and Bangalore by 200 kms. The association also demanded additional facilities at Kumbakonam on completion of Kumbakonam-Chennai broad gauge line. It also demanded introduction of four trains from Mayiladuthurai to Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Rameswaram and Salem. On receiving the memorandum, Aiyar wrote to Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu and Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni to consider the demands. Mr. Sathiyanarayanan said that Kumbakonam is a temple town and tourist centre. Mahamaham festival is held there once in 12 years. Iravatheswarar temple is located at Darasuram near Kumbakonam. The temple has been declared a world heritage monument by UNESCO. Navagraha temples are located around Kumbakonam. It is a business centre for brass vessels, silk sarees, icons, silver articles and wick lamps.
