KOLKATA: Kolkata Commissioner of Police Prasun Mukherjee and four others, including two Deputy Commissioners, were transferred on Wednesday in connection with the mysterious death of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman.
His body was found lying by the side of the railway tracks near here on September 21.
Further action would be taken against them on the basis of the outcome of the inquiries, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said.
“I have decided on their transfers in view of the questions being raised by different sections of people, as well as the media, on their role in the incident which has become a very sensitive issue. … Being transferred is also a punishment,” Mr. Bhattacharjee said, adding that “the sentiments of the bereaved family” was taken into account.
The transfer decision was “politically made earlier” but not announced as the government awaited the Calcutta High Court ruling on a petition filed by Rahman family for a CBI inquiry, he said.
The court, in an interim order, directed the CBI to probe the death and submit a report within two months.
The State government had ordered a judicial inquiry.
“The State government will not appeal against the court ruling ‘for political reasons,’ but the question of how ‘constitutional’ it is remains to be answered as it comes at a time when a constitutional Bench of six judges had been set up by the Supreme Court to look into whether a High Court can give such a ruling [of directing the CBI to inquire] bypassing the State government concerned,” Mr. Bhattacharjee said.
