CHENNAI: The Postal department’s move to franchise some of its basic operations in areas lacking a post office has been received well by the public, with a steady increase in the number of the transactions at the facilities over the past six months.
The franchise post offices were opened in Velachery West, Ayanavaram, Choolaimedu and Moovarasampet near Madipakkam between March and April to cater to the demand in these fast-developing areas, according to a senior Postal department official.
The transactions at the franchisees include acceptance of money orders, booking registered posts, sale of stamps and remittance towards telephone bills. The cumulative transactions in the four franchisees increased from 654 in April to 1,435 in August of which the one at Vijayanagar, Velachery West, accounted for the maximum, he said.
But people need to approach post offices managed by the department for investment needs, such as saving schemes.
Residents of Vijayanagar said the franchise outlet was useful to them because of its proximity. V.T. Raman, a resident, said it was a long-pending need of the area.
However, Choolaimedu residents suggested that a post office be opened on Choolaimedu Main Road.
Postal authorities said that the concept of franchisees was evolved to meet the demand in areas wherever the department was unable to carry out service due to administrative reasons.
The possibility of establishing such facilities in other areas was under study, an official said.
