Remarkable win for India

Principal Correspondent

HYDERABAD: India pulled off a remarkable come-from-behind victory over Brazil 23-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-17 to qualify for the volleyball super league in the Military World Games at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday.

The Brazilians had better control of the game in the first set with Paulo Victor da Silva and Rafel da Silva combining well at the net and Matquel Dafoz had the liberty to come up with telling smashes

Breathtaking retrieves

Though for the host, libero Jakhmola Arun was brilliant with some breathtaking retrieves, but lacked support at the net.

But things changed dramatically for the home team when captain Shijas Mohammed took charge as booster and Siju Joseph was spot on with his job. But with the early lead in place, the Brazilians took the first set at 25-23.

In the second set, it was the Indians who paid back the compliments with a high degree of consistency. Shijas picked the gaps in the centre with his powerful smashes and the effective double-block employed by Rahul Singh and Rajil Mathew were the highlights of the gallant fightback by the Indians.

After clinching the second set, the Indians never looked back as they came up with a stunning display which saw the Brazilian coach Paulo de Tarso repeatedly fuming at his players in disgust. This was the phase when Shijas surprised the Brazilians with some delectable drops. Under pressure, the Brazilians wilted in the fourth set.

“We took time to settle down. But everything went as per the plan in the next three sets,” Shijas said.

The other teams that qualified for the super league were defending champion Korea, Qatar and China.

Other results: Qatar bt Netherlands 25-22, 27-25, 25-16; Korea bt Canada 25-17, 25-20, 25-18; China bt Latvia 25-20, 25-17, 25-12.
