NEW DELHI: India’s quest to earn Olympic quota berths for the 2008 Beijing Games suffered a minor setback even before the pugilists could fly out for the World boxing championship to be held in Chicago from October 23 to November 3.
The Manchester Commonwealth Games silver medallist Som Bahadur Pun has pulled out due to illness. Pun, the light-welterweight champion, is down with jaundice. Pun, who has suffered many career-threatening diseases, has made a comeback every time on sheer will-power.
“We are still confident and upbeat about our chances of winning quota berths for the Beijing Olympics,” said the team coach G.S. Sandhu.
The Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) had sent entries in nine of the 11 weight categories.
