Police take to yoga, beat stress

Kozhikode: The ancient Indian spiritual practice, yoga, now redefined in the modern age to eliminate stress, has caught the fascination the city police personnel.

Yoga classes have been introduced to a new batch of police personnel undergoing a refresher training programme in basic policing at the Nadakkavu police station. Kozhikode City Police Commissioner Balram Kumar Upadhyay inaugurated the course on Tuesday.

Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Yoga exponent Vijayaraghavan of the city-based Satyananda Yoga Research Centre is handling the daily one-hour class for three weeks. About 20 personnel including Sub-Inspectors drawn from various stations in the city are being trained.

Any personnel interested in attending the one-hour session are free to join the yoga classes, an officer said. For the last two months, police personnel of the city in different batches are being trained in law, prosecution, police-public relations and community policing at Nadakkavu station. Yoga was a recent inclusion, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) C.M. Pradeep Kumar, the in-charge of the course.

Local policemen had been experiencing immense job-related stress. The yoga programme would be an antidote to tension. The training programme has already helped improve the functioning of the police, Mr. Pradeep Kumar said.
