Cooking gas agents in Malappuram warned

‘Those who fleece customers will face action’

MALAPPURAM: District Collector Sumana N. Menon has urged LPG consumers not to pay gas agencies anything more than the price shown in the bill. Her statement came at an open forum of LPG consumers held at the Collectorate conference hall here on Thursday.

Ms. Menon asked consumers to be vigilant against fleecing agencies in the wake of the complaints about some agencies levying more than the bill amount for gas cylinders. She warned the gas agencies of stern action if they are found taxing the customers.

Agents’ version

Gas agents claimed that some consumers gave tips and that extra amount was not charged from the public. The Collector, however, refused to entertain their excuses.

She said consumers should insist on receipt when applying for a new connection as well as for the second cylinder. Gas agents should keep a register of the applications and that it should be shown to them on demand, she said.

As many as 16,000 gas connections were given in the district in the last eight months. Eleven more gas agencies will soon start functioning at different places in the district.
