BIJAPUR: Nirmala Venkatesh, member of the National Commission for Women, has urged Governor Rameshwar Thakur to transfer Registrar of Karnataka State Women’s University G.V. Sugur. Ms. Venkatesh, who inquired the complaint filed by the university Vice-Chancellor Syeda Akhar against Mr. Sugur, told the presspersons here on Thursday that she was recommending to the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university, that Mr. Sugur be shifted from his present position immediately. Ms. Venkatesh said she was convinced that Dr. Akhtar had been subjected to “harassment”, and Mr Sugur’s conduct contributed to this directly or indirectly. She viewed the video footage of July 13 syndicate meeting chaired by Dr. Akhtar. The meeting was disrupted by activists of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishat. The Vice-Chancellor was apparently roughed up by them. Mr. Sugur who was also at the meeting had not come to her rescue. ComplaintsShe said the commission had also received complaints from some of the women employees of Vidhana Soudha about the “sexual harassment” at their work place. The complaints would be probed, she added. Ms. Venkatesh said a comprehensive law would be enacted soon to prevent exploitation of women. The commission had prepared a draft in this regard, and it would be submitted to the Union Government, she added.
