KORAPUT: Consumption of contaminated country liquor, known as ‘pendum’ in local parlance, allegedly caused the death of seven persons in Matarguda village of Korkunda block in Malkangiri district. While Ganga Rawa, Madi Ura, Irama Padiami and Arma Madkami died immediately after consuming the spurious liquor, Ganga Madhi, Muka Rawa and Parimal Haldar succumbed after being taken to a hospital at Malkangiri. The condition of three others who were admitted was serious, hospital sources said. Tragedy struck when the villagers gathered to celebrate ‘Nuakhai’, a tribal festival when country liquor is prepared by boiling fermented rice. The police seized the containers in which the substance was brewed.
