’Attempt to keep minorities off Communists’ Church authorities told to end controversy THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State executive of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has called upon minority communities to see through the political motives of the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) and put an end to the row over the last rites of Mathai Chacko, former CPI(M) legislator. In a statement here on Thursday, the CPI executive said the objective of the Congress and the UDF was to reverse the growing amity between Communists and the faithful. They knew that their very survival was dependent on keeping minorities away from the Left movement. The ongoing controversy was part of their bid to wean away minorities from the company of Communists, it said. The CPI leadership said the controversy sought to be raked up by the Church authorities over the sacrament received by Mathai Chacko shortly before his death was most condemnable. Every citizen had the right to believe or not to believe in religion. India had retained its secular tradition thanks to acceptance of this principle by one and all. The present controversy should have ended with Mathai Chacko’s relatives clarifying that he had not received the sacrament of anointing of the dying. However, the attempt was to convert it into a dispute between Communists and believers. The Church authorities should think if this stand was in the larger interests of minorities, it added. The CPI(M) leadership denied reports in a section of the media that there were disputes in the party State secretariat over Munnar developments. There was no difference in the stand taken by the party on the Munnar issue and reports to the contrary were part of the attempt to defame the party, the CPI executive said.
