Students, sarpanches, academicians and social action groups took part in the programme This was in response to the U.N. Millennium Campaign’s call for eradication of poverty. JAIPUR: Thousands of people stood up in support of the U.N. Millennium Development Goals at 50 locations in 18 districts of Rajasthan on Wednesday as part of the “Stand up, speak out” event to hold the State Government accountable for achieving MDGs by 2015. The State-wide event was organised by the Jaipur-based Centre for Community Economics and Development Consultants’ Society (CECOEDECON), Wada Na Todo Abhiyan and their partner organisations. This was in response to the U.N. Millennium Campaign’s call to mobilise people on the international day for eradication of poverty. School and college students, village panchayats, sarpanches, pradhans, trade unions’ representatives, academicians, social action groups and youth groups took part in the programme. About two dozen civil society organisations took part in holding the event at the village, block and city levels. Two major events were organised in Jaipur by the Public Relations Society of India and the Centre for Dalit Rights. A song composed by public relations activist Manohar Prabhakar on the need for justice and equity in the society was presented on the occasion. About 97-lakh people in India had joined 2.35-crore people around the world last year in the “Stand up” event, which was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as an official world record for the largest number of people standing up for a cause. CECODECON has entered into a partnership agreement with the Institute of Development Studies, Jaipur, with the support of the U.N. Millennium Campaign to accelerate progress through fostering cooperation with the community-based organisations and Governments of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
