NEW DELHI: Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Akhand Pratap Singh, who was arrested on September 25 by the Central Bureau of Investigation in a disproportionate assets case, was granted bail by a city court here on Thursday. Bond and suretySpecial Judge I. K. Kochhar granted bail to the former Chief Secretary on furnishing a personal bond of Rs. 2 lakh and a surety of like amount. The court also put a few conditions before granting bail. Singh was arrested by the CBI two years after a disproportionate assets case was registered against him on March 22, 2005. The CBI had carried out searches at three places in Delhi, two places in Bahraich (Uttar Pradesh) and four places in Nainital (Uttarakhand). Huge depositsThe CBI had said the retired IAS officer had more than 100 bank accounts with huge deposits and had a “benami” fleet of luxury vehicles. He also spent a huge amount in the education and marriage of his children. According to the CBI, the accused, who was arrested at his farmhouse in Vasant Kunj, also had deposits in several overseas banks and lived extravagantly.
