dated October 19, 1957: Nobel Prize for literature

The Nobel Prize for literature was on October 17 awarded to M. Albert Camus, the French novelist and philosopher. In its citation, the Swedish Academy, which decides the award, stated that it was for “his important literary production, which with clear-sighted earnestness illuminates the problems of the human conscience in our times.” The presentation ceremony will take place in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of the death of the Alfred Nobel. Mr. Camus, who is only 44, will be youngest winner of the literature prize, with the exception of Rudyard Kipling, who was a year or so younger when he received this distinction.
